- The standard for compatibility of digital wireless phones with hearing aids is set forth in American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard C63.19. ANSI C63.19 contains two sets of standards: an "M" rating from one to four for reduced radio frequency (RF) interference to enable acoustic coupling with hearing aids that do not operate in telecoil mode; or a "T" rating from one to four to enable inductive coupling with hearing aid operating in telecoil mode. A digital wireless handset is considered hearing aid-compatible for acoustic coupling if it meets an "M3" rating under the ANSI standard. A digital wireless handset is considered hearing aid-compatible for inductive coupling if it meets a "T3" rating under the ANSI standard.
- Handsets that receive a hearing aid compatibility rating of M3 or M4 have met or surpassed the ANSI hearing aid compatibility standard as adopted by the Federal Communications Commission. A wireless handset with a rating of M3 or M4 usually provides reduced RF interference for hearing aids designed for compatibility.
- Toshiba's Brilliant smartphone is designed, tested and certified to meet the FCC M4 rating standards.
- A hearing aid compatibility ratings system is not a guarantee. Results will vary depending on the user's hearing device and hearing loss. It is important to try the different features of the phone thoroughly and in different locations, using your hearing aid device to evaluate whether it meets your personal needs.
